The Story...

We've had exceptional support while birthing "What The World Needs Now" - such wonderful, warm audiences. After one of our workshop shows last fall, a lovely person whom I'd never met before - Michele Lenick - came up to me, and told me how much she loved the show and how the music brought so many memories back to her – especially memories of her and her mom – and how much they loved this music together. Michele was really moved that night and made a vow to help me get my show in front of a larger audience.

Just a few weeks after that night, Michele’s mom passed away, due to complications from Alzheimer's.

Not soon after, Michele collected all of her strength and dove into creating a fundraiser (Music For My Mom) in her mom's honour, to raise funds for The Alzheimer's Society Of Canada and their amazing Music Project http://alz.to/get-help/music-project/

I am so very honoured to be performing What the World Needs Now at this fundraiser on May 21 @the Mod Club in Toronto.

Please join us for a night of great music and memories for such a worthy cause.

Also, I’m thrilled and a little awe-struck that the night will be hosted by the hilariously charming, Deb McGrath & Colin Mochrie!!

JAZZING IT UP IN EUROPE!

What a fab time we had recently at The Ladies' Jazz Festival in beautiful Gdynia, Poland! We walked along the sea, we drank Polish beer, we made wonderful new friends, and played our music with talented local musicians in one of the most gorgeous theatres we've seen yet! The audience was wonderful, so respectful, so with us!

Dziękuję Ci, Poland! We hope to return soon...

I could not be more excited!

I could not be more excited!

Save the date, hop on a plane, jump on a ship, or maybe you’re already in Europe – come, join me in beautiful Gdynia Poland for this year’s Ladies International Jazz Festival, August 27!

Chris Botti, Stacy Kent, Dionne Warwick, Nikki Yanofsky, Lizz Wright – are a few of my most favourite artists! Well - I now have something very special in common with them - they have all performed at The esteemed Ladies International Jazz Festival in Gdynia Poland - and now… I’ve been invited to perform, as well. I could not be more full of gratitude and excitement. I’ll be bringing Jim along to play drums and act as musical director - and in the true spirit of improv and international fun – my band will also be made of 3 of Poland’s finest musicians. Lots more about this to come...

JUST CALL ME "70 ACROSS" FROM NOW ON...!

So very thrilled to have been asked by none other than brilliant singer/songwriter Marc Jordan, to sing on his newest effort! Produced by the ever so happening (you name them, he's worked with them) Lou Pomanti! The stuff I sang on is stunning, goosebump territory... can't wait until it's released.

HOME SMITH BAR IN THE OLD MILL TORONTO! APRIL 29/2017
Last night we set a record at the Home Smith Bar for the most attendance EVER!! What a night - The Jazz.FM91 - Jazz and The Arts Safari dropped in, the ever charming and lovable Jaymz Bee delighted the crowd with a song, then he and the golden-voiced Sam Broverman did a hilarious duet and finally during our last set, the incomparable JUNO nominated Heather JaneBambrick appeared and joined me in an impromptu duet of Close To You! The audience was with us from the first song to the very last! This photo taken by my most enthusiastic and wonderful friend Jane M. Brennan. What a supportive group they were - wish I could thank them each, individually.... XO

WHAT THE WORLD NEEDS NOW
(A Musical Journey Of Love & Hope Through The Mad Men Era) SOULPEPPER CABARET/DEC.10

It’s been in the back of my mind since I was 5. This show. This memoir. This truth-telling. This candid confession of my experiences growing up. I’d pin it against the backdrop of the time in history it actually happened – the mid-60s into the early 70s - one of the most pivotal eras of the 20th century.  I’d combine my memories of pop-culture and politics with renditions of the songs of my childhood that blasted out of my little transistor radio, by Barbara, Dusty and Dionne - straight into my heart. Songs I’ve felt I was meant to sing my whole life.

In the back of my mind I pictured the monologues I’d write, about the pain of watching my parents marriage unravel and the father I hardly knew, but I’d also giddily reveal the thrill of living through an era of great hope, great possibility and amazing pop-culture.

This idea stayed in the back of my mind for many years… until… I opened up my mouth one day last summer and told my piano player Steve Hunter and my husband and musical collaborator, Jim Gillard. Suddenly it had a life, it had a title - What The World Needs Now (A Journey Of Love And Hope Through The Mad Men Era and  -it had a concept.

I found myself writing the script during every minute of my spare time, thinking about it in my sleep and as soon as I woke up. Before I knew it we had a song list, Steve was creating arrangements and charts, Jim was learning harmonies and duet parts. We began to rehearse in our basement and within a month we were booked into Soulpepper’s cabaret series. The show was sold out with 3 weeks to go. I honed the script constantly and we rehearsed it in our basement nightly through November 2016. On December 10, 2016 we performed it for the first time at Soulpepper in the funky cabaret space. The audience was with me through every monologue and every song just like I’d imagined so many years before. I urged them to sing along and they did – mightily! I watched them laugh hard and saw tears roll down their cheeks, too. That night, I knew I had something very special in my possession - and I look forward to performing it again and again!!

ME, NORAH & GAGA ON THE CHARTS!

Me, Norah & Gaga on the charts...

Me, Norah & Gaga on the charts...

Piosenki

Yep, that's me - sitting just under Norah and Gaga at No# 29 on the charts!

So....I recorded this album in LA a few years back - originally it was the companion album to the Polanski-directed Movie, The Pianist. The film won Oscars and Golden Globes but more importantly, it told Wladyslaw Szpilman's holocaust story - how he lost his entire family but survived the horrors of the Nazi death camps. He was able to return to Warsaw after the war where he became a celebrated composer, pianist and the director of the Popular Music Department at Polish Radio (Poland's NPR/BBC/CBC). These songs are his compositions - his melodies and chords but the twist is that the lyrics are not translations, they're original lyrics written by some of the finest songwriters in North America and the production - produced by John Leftwich (Carmen McRae, Rickie Lee Jones, Melody Gardot) is also very American - rootsy and jazzy.

Cut to today - I'm so THRILLED that Polish Radio has repackaged this gem of an album and has released it in Poland where it had not been previously released!! Even more thrilled to be sitting just under Nora and Gaga at No# 29 on the charts!
